Korean alphabet letters celebrating Hangeul Day, observed on October 9

That's right. Every October 9, South Korea celebrates Hangeul Day, dedicated to one of the most important parts of Korean culture: its writing system.

What is Hangeul Day (한글날, Hangeullal), and when is it celebrated?

Hangeul Day (한글날, Hangeullal) is celebrated every year on October 9 in South Korea. It's a national awareness day and a public holiday dedicated to Hangeul, the Korean writing system.

But why does Korea have a day to celebrate its writing system? To understand why, we need to go back in time to when Koreans spoke their own language but did not yet have a writing system of their own.

The history of Hangeul Day

Hangeul Day is celebrated every October 9 in South Korea to commemorate the creation and proclamation of Hangeul, the Korean writing system. It was introduced by King Sejong the Great (세종대왕, Sejong Daewang), the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty, who reigned from 1418 to 1450. His goal was to create a writing system that people could learn and use easily.

How does Hangeul work?

Hangeul is a phonetic writing system with 24 basic letters: 14 consonants and 10 vowels. These also form the basis for 5 double consonants and 11 compound vowels, representing a wider range of Korean sounds.

The letters are combined into syllable blocks, with each representing one syllable. This structure provides a systematic way to depict Korean sounds and makes learning to read and write relatively straightforward.

Why did Korea need a new writing system?

Before Hangeul existed, Korean was already a spoken language, but it did not have a writing system of its own. Until the early 15th century, Korean was mainly written using Chinese characters (한자·漢字, hanja) instead.

However, writing Korean with Chinese characters was complicated and mastering it took many years of study, meaning it was largely limited to the upper classes. Reading and writing were difficult for much of the population, creating a need for a more accessible writing system.

Who was King Sejong, and why did he create Hangeul?

To address this problem, King Sejong (세종대왕, Sejong Daewang), the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty who reigned from 1418 to 1450, brought together a group of scholars to create a new writing system. He wanted people to be able to learn and use it easily. Their work led to the Hangeul we know today.

When was Hangeul created, and what is the Hunminjeongeum?

Hangeul was created in 1443 and officially introduced in 1446. In 1446, the Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음, 訓民正音) was published, explaining the story behind the new writing system, how its letters were designed, and how to use them.

The name Hunminjeongeum means "the correct sounds for instructing the people." It nicely encompasses the aim of creating a writing system that people could learn and use easily.

The Haerye Edition of the Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음 해례본), which explains the principles behind Hangeul and how it works, was added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 1997.

Is Hangeul Day celebrated the same way in North Korea?

In South Korea, Hangeul Day is celebrated on October 9, a date linked to the proclamation of the Hunminjeongeum. In North Korea, it is observed on January 15, which is the date associated with the creation of the writing system.

In North Korea, the writing system is usually called Joseongeul (조선글) rather than Hangeul. Unlike in South Korea, the date is not a national celebration or a public holiday, and is not widely celebrated.

Why is Hangeul Day still so important?

Hangeul Day is more than just a date to commemorate a writing system. It's also a chance to learn about the history of a script designed to help more people read, write, and express themselves more easily.

That's why October 9 is a special day for Koreans – people who take pride in their writing system and want to remember King Sejong's legacy.
