The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) is an international standardized test designed to assess the Chinese language proficiency of young learners in primary and secondary school. It evaluates their ability to use Chinese as a second language in daily and academic contexts. The YCT is divided into two independent parts: a writing test and a speaking test.

Test Structure

• The writing test is available at four levels: YCT 1, YCT 2, YCT 3, and YCT 4.
• The speaking test includes two levels: Beginner and Intermediate.

Test Levels

The levels of the new YCT align with the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as shown below:

HSK 2.0 YCT Vocabulary CLPS CEFR
HSK 6 5,000+ Level V C2
HSK 5 2,500 Level V C1
HSK 4 1,200 Level IV B2
HSK 3 YCT 4 600 Level III B1
HSK 2 YCT 3 300 Level II A2
HSK 1 YCT 2 150 Level I A1
YCT 1 80

What each YCT level means

• YCT 1: Understands and uses basic phrases and sentences. Ideal for beginners.
• YCT 2: Can handle simple phrases and basic communication.
• YCT 3: Has a solid foundation in basic Chinese and can communicate about everyday topics.
• YCT 4: Can communicate in daily, academic and professional contexts. Suitable for basic travel in China.

Writing Test Duration

Level Duration (minutes)
YCT 1 30
YCT 2 45
YCT 3 55
YCT 4 80

Test Principles

The YCT aims to boost learners’ confidence and follows the principle of “teaching and testing alignment”. It is designed based on international language education trends and integrates closely with classroom learning. The goal is to promote learning through testing.

Test Purposes

• A way for students to assess and improve their Chinese skills.
• A reference tool for curriculum planning in schools.
• An evaluation tool for Chinese language programs.
• A benchmark before progressing to the HSK test.

Results Certificate

Test takers receive their YCT score report issued by Hanban within three weeks after taking the exam.

How is the YCT different from the HSK?

The YCT is designed for younger learners in primary or lower secondary school. The HSK is aimed at older students or adults, particularly those seeking to study in Chinese universities or requiring certification for work. If a student has never taken a Chinese proficiency test before, we recommend starting with YCT Level I.
