Information about the HSK 3.0 pilot test on 20 September 2026 for candidates taking HSK levels 1 to 6

A new global HSK 3.0 pilot test for levels 1 to 6 will take place on 20 September 2026. However, regular HSK exams in 2026 will still follow the HSK 2.0 format. The official date for the full rollout of the new HSK 3.0 has not yet been announced.

You’ve probably already heard that HSK 3.0 is the new version of the official Chinese proficiency test, and will eventually replace the current format, HSK 2.0. The latest version includes new levels, new vocabulary lists, changes to the exam format and a greater focus on the four main skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

However, although several of the new textbooks adapted to the HSK 3.0 exam and the new vocabulary lists have already been published, there is still no official rollout date for the new HSK 3.0 exam. This means that, throughout 2026, regular HSK 1 to HSK 6 exams will still follow the current HSK 2.0 format.

For now, HSK 3.0 is being introduced gradually through specific pilot tests. The first took place in early 2026, and now a second global test has opened for candidates who want to be the first to try out the new format.

When will the HSK 3.0 pilot test take place?

Chinese Testing International has announced a second global HSK 3.0 pilot test for 20 September 2026.

The test will be available for the following levels:

  • HSK 1
  • HSK 2
  • HSK 3
  • HSK 4
  • HSK 5
  • HSK 6

HSK levels 7-9 are not included in this specific pilot test.

Key registration dates

The HSK 3.0 pilot test on 20 September 2026 will be available in two formats. According to the official Chinese Test announcement, the registration deadline depends on the exam format.

  • Registration opens: 3 August 2026 at 09:00 Beijing time.
  • Paper-based test registration closes: 24 August 2026 at 00:00 Beijing time.
  • Computer-based test registration closes: 10 September 2026 at 00:00 Beijing time.
  • Exam date: 20 September 2026.

Make sure you check the details released by your chosen test center, because not all centers offer the same levels or formats. A computer-based test usually takes place at a test center, unless stated otherwise.

Is there a speaking test in HSK 3.0?

Yes, but it's not mandatory for all levels.

Only candidates taking HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5 and HSK 6 must also register for the corresponding speaking test. HSK 1 and HSK 2 do not include a compulsory speaking test.

In which countries can you take this test?

The official announcement states that the pilot test will be held globally and that test centers are available in various countries. To find your nearest participating test center, register on Chinese Test and try to sign up for the exam on 20 September. The “Continent”, “Country” and “Test Center” dropdown menus will update accordingly.

So in 2026, should I prepare for HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?

If you are taking a regular HSK exam in 2026, you should continue preparing for the current format, i.e., HSK 2.0. HSK 3.0 has not yet officially replaced all regular exams.

If you specifically register for the test on 20 September 2026, then you should prepare using the HSK 3.0 format, vocabulary and structure.

The official date for when HSK 3.0 will fully replace the current HSK has not yet been announced.

Why take this HSK 3.0 pilot test?

This pilot test may be useful if you want to see what the new HSK 3.0 will be like before its full rollout.

It can help you:

  • get used to the new format
  • check your level according to the new lists
  • practice the new exam requirements
  • get an official score report
  • better understand how HSK preparation will change in the coming years

According to the official announcement, your scores for this pilot test will be valid for two years, just like the HSK 2.0 exams.

The first official materials for the new HSK 3.0 are gradually being released throughout the year.
